What is lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition in which there is a disorder in the production and growth of fat cells in specific areas of the body. Often hereditary factors also play a role in Lipedema. So fat legs are not always just fat legs; they can be lipedema legs.

It is a condition in which the increase in fatty tissue is unevenly distributed. This causes fatty deposits in areas such as the legs and arms. The hands, ankles and feet do not thicken.

This uneven distribution of fat cells can cause symptoms. These include soreness, fatigue and a heavy feeling in the legs, as well as easy bruising.

Lipedema - Hormonal changes

What is special about lipedema is that it occurs almost exclusively in women and girls. About 10% of women are affected by this condition. Often this happens, during a period when the hormone levels change, such as puberty, pregnancy or during menopause.

No Clear Cause of Lipedema

The cause of lipedema is not yet completely clear. There are many different factors that can contribute to the development of this condition. Part of the cause of lipedema is in the area of heredity but hormones and receptors can also cause you to get lipedema.

The origin of lipedema is not exactly known, but genetic factors play a part in its development. When you get lipedema, there is nothing you can do about it yourself. And the tricky thing is, the fat deposits won't go away even with healthy eating and exercise.

Lipedema complaints

The symptoms suffered by patients with lipedema vary widely. On the thighs, lower legs, hips, thighs, inner knees and arms, localized fat deposits develop. In addition, these fat deposits on hips and thighs can cause pain symptoms or cause the legs to tire quickly.

The limbs often increase in size. This can cause a difference of 2 to 3 clothing sizes between your upper and lower body. Lipedema occurs on both sides of the body in fairly equal proportions, i.e. symmetrically.

Due to localized fat accumulation on the hips, lying on your side can be difficult, painful or sensitive.

Because of lipedema, the upper legs may be tired and tender. Loss of strength in arms and legs is also among the symptoms that fit lipedema. Standing and sitting can become heavy, tiring and painful over time.

Other lipedema symptoms

In addition to the tissue being sensitive, bruising can occur more quickly. The skin is often lumpy in texture. Furthermore, a characteristic symptom of lipedema is that swollen feet and thick ankles do not develop. The hands and wrists also do not experience accumulations of fat.

People with lipedema may also develop weight problems. There are a number of causes directly related to lipedema. It can also be a result of improper diet and too little exercise.

If harder exercise due to lipedema causes you to burn fewer calories and maintain the same intake, you will gain weight. If you are unaware that leg growth is related to lipedema, while you find that losing weight does not affect the size of your legs, you may lose motivation to lose weight.

Lipedema legs - fat accumulation in legs

Knee problems are seen much more frequently in people with lipedema. This could be due to an altered position of the legs. Due to volume increase of fat accumulation between the legs (thighs), the legs must be placed further apart. This creates an altered walking pattern and an altered load on the knee joint.

Another conceivable cause of the more frequent occurrence of knee pain is the low-grade inflammation in the lipedema leg tissue which causes damage to the knee joint.
The increased fat volume on the inside of the thighs causes the legs to rub against each other. This is annoying and may even cause skin complaints.

In addition, mental symptoms may also develop, which may worsen over time. Social isolation, insecurity and psychosocial complaints are unfortunately common.

Can lipedema get worse?

Yes, lipedema can certainly worsen. When and in whom and to what extent is not always easy to predict. Factors such as prolonged immobility due to illness, pregnancies and menopause may be times when lipedema worsens.

At a more advanced stage, the fat cells become increasingly plump and rigid, more lymph fluid accumulates with protein precipitation and increase in low-grade inflammation, which will again accelerate the growth of fat cells.

Is lipedema curable?

No, Lipedema is unfortunately not curable. Lipedema is a difficult condition to treat but in the early stages you can still influence the course of this disease yourself in certain ways.

The most important thing here is a healthy lifestyle. Enough exercise and healthy eating allows most people to keep their weight fairly stable. Increase in body weight gives growth not only of the normal adipose tissue, but also of the lipedema adipose tissue.

The tricky thing is, with weight loss the lipedema fat does not disappear much, if at all. Sometimes it may be advisable to lose weight. In addition, by exercising sufficiently and continuing to exercise, you strengthen your muscles.

Resculpt Clinic developed a special lipedema diet that can help with this. This diet or actually nutrition plan is aimed at optimally supporting your body when you suffer from lipedema.

Lipedema therapy for Lipedema

Edema therapy with a skin therapist or physical therapist helps drain the lymphatic fluid containing proteins and inflammatory substances. This often eases most of the pain and reduces the volume somewhat. This makes the legs feel more comfortable and less heavy again and allows you to move more easily.

Because it reduces low-grade inflammation and protein deposition in the tissue, it is very conceivable that it may also inhibit the progression of the disease. Oedema therapy can include LPG endermology, manual lymph drainage, IPC (intermittent pneumatic compression therapy) and the fitting of compression garments (pantyhose, compression stockings).

ReSculpt Clinic works with several edema therapists, if you would like more information please contact one of our medical specialists →

Lipedema treatment at ReSculpt Clinic

One of the most effective treatments is ReSculpt Clinic's lipedema treatment through tumescent liposuction. ReSculpt Clinic is the specialist in the field of tumescent liposuction.

In tumescent liposuction, a large portion of the (abnormal) fatty tissue is removed. Thus, the fat volume decreases and symptoms can be greatly reduced. Pain decreases (often tremendously), as does volume.

This will allow you to move better and more pleasantly and therefore lose weight more easily. Clothing will fit better again and you will feel better in your own skin because your upper and lower body will fit better together again. Knee problems are also often reduced.

The results are permanent and the lipedema will never get as bad as it was before the treatment.

Frequently asked questions about the cause of lipedema

Because lipedema occurs almost exclusively in women and girls, female genes and/or female hormones and/or receptors probably play an important role in the onset of lipedema. Lipedema can begin from puberty, sometimes becoming evident only after pregnancy or menopause.

Lipedema cannot be cured, but it is treatable. Edema therapy for lipedema is an important conservative treatment. A stable weight, healthy diet and regular exercise and exercise help control lipedema.
Liposuction under local anesthesia can remove fatty tissue. After that, it is important to keep the weight constant to prevent new increases in lipedema. What's gone is gone, so that's always a win.

Lipedema legs can be recognized by increase in volume due to fat deposits. The limbs may feel heavy and tired as a result. There is also often a difference of two or three clothing sizes between the upper and lower body.
In severe cases, the lipedema legs are very bumpy and the fat layer often feels more solid than that of the normal tissue (abdomen/flanks). Touch, pressure or bumping often is sensitive or even painful. Lipedema can run in the family in women on both fathers' and mothers' sides.

The cause of thick upper legs could be lipedema. This is not the same as obesity, although the conditions may be related. Lipedema legs are often painful, feel tired and bruise easily.
